GISTec specialises in the design, implementation, and management of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Geographical Information Systems are data information systems expressly designed to create, manage, analyse and display all forms of geographically or spatially referenced data, such as property boundaries, river buffer zones, or soil sampling locations. The power of a GIS is its ability to link to databases containing detailed information on geographic objects (the owner of the property, the size of the buffer zone, or the gold content of a soil sample) and perform complex analyses on data relationships. An example can be viewed here.

We have been working with MapInfo Professional GIS software since 1994 and MapInfo’s MapBasic programming language since 1997. GISTec also has extensive experience the MapInfo add-on software Discover, which is used to plot drill sections for mineral exploration. We are also familiar with ARCView, ARC/INFO and ILWIS software.

GISTec has integrated MapInfo into a number of organisations and customised it to function in a variety of roles from a simple map drawing facility, to the use of thematic mapping to aid in decision making, to complete turnkey solutions with links to external databases.

We can set up a MapInfo GIS and provide onsite training for clients or utilise our facilities to conduct any or all aspects of a client’s GIS or mapping requirements.

GISTec can offer the following services:

  • Data Acquisition - purchasing or capturing data, including digitising and data import/conversion from other formats,
  • Data Management - database development and linking to non-spatial datasets, management of meta-data (important data relating to data collection such as map grid and datum used, collection date, data accuracy etc.)
  • Data Analysis - querying (or filtering) datasets and creation of thematic maps to improve data analysis,
  • Map Production - designing appropriate map layouts (scale, title block, other map information) and printing/plotting up to A0 size and 600dpi resolution,
  • Application Development - design of applications to manage or interrogate data using MapBasic, design of custom interfaces for MapInfo.
